In its continuing coordination efforts since 1981, Bi-State Regional Commission has contacted annually the authorities responsible for repairs and construction on the Mississippi and Rock River bridges in the Quad City Metropolitan Area.

The Quad Cities Metropolitan Area spends up to 70% of its funds on maintenance and reconstruction projects. Maintaining the existing transportation system is one of the highest priorities of the urban area. The 2035 Quad City Long Range Transportation Plan outlines significant improvements to river crossing capacity to improve the flow of traffic in the metropolitan area. Alternative modes of transportation, such as buses, carpools, bicycling or walking, are encouraged to help reduce traffic congestion and maintain good air quality.
